A dryer that runs — tumbling normally, timer counting down — but never produces heat almost always has one of three causes: a burned-out heating element (electric dryers), a failed igniter (gas dryers), or a tripped thermal fuse that's cutting power to the heating circuit as a safety measure.

The thermal fuse is worth mentioning first because it's directly connected to how well your dryer vents. This small safety device trips when the dryer runs hotter than it should, which usually means airflow is restricted — most often from a lint-clogged vent line rather than a fuse defect on its own. Replacing the fuse without clearing the vent just means it trips again.

This is genuinely more relevant in Charleston than in many markets: a large share of the area's housing stock includes older homes with long or awkwardly routed dryer vent runs — sometimes going up through a wall cavity or across an attic — which trap lint more than a short, straight run would. A less common cause is a failed high-limit thermostat or cycling thermostat, which regulates temperature during normal operation. These typically cause inconsistent heat (hot, then cold, then hot again) rather than a complete absence of heat.
